I was once afraid. I was afraid to open up and tell people about the things I was dealing with and suffering from. But there was a time in my life, a dark time, where I wanted to end my life. That was my catalyst moment. That's when I reached rock bottom. I knew there were two options. 1) End my life 2) or seek help. I put my fear aside and picked up the phone for help. One of the greatest honors of my life was being able to teach, coach and mentor the next generation of criminal justice professionals. My next guest is also doing that and he is going to talk about educating future criminal justice professionals. Dr. Michael Pittaro is on the show. Mike is a full-time faculty member at American Military University in The School of Security and Global Studies.
Dr. Pittaro is an education advocate, challenging students to push the boundaries of their capabilities and achieve successful careers in Criminal Justice. Leveraging over 30 years of career experience in leadership, criminal justice and criminology, he has used his wealth of information to develop seasoned professionals. As an experienced criminal justice scholar practitioner and Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Criminal Justice, he has taught thousands of undergraduate students in reaching their career goals. Some many of us, myself included, try to look into the future. We look into the future to try to determine what is going to happen to use personally and professionally but we always fall short and we get frustrated. When I was in therapy at Shatterproof I learned that I needed to live more in the moment. I learned how to cherish each moment. Cherish and be grateful for what was in my world at the moment. You see even if you are going through difficult times right now there is so much to be grateful for. 
Living in the moment and stepping back from the things we can't control will bring you more peace and happiness. I remember hearing the following prayer when I was growing up. It's called the Serenity Prayer:
" God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know there difference."

You know when I was in some of my darkest places I was ashamed and fearful of initially reaching out for help. As a first responder I was taught and encouraged to bury my issues. You know what I am talking about. The hardest thing I did was reach out, and I am forever grateful I did. I was also very afraid of what others might think of me. Family and Friends. I then came to realize that I didn't care what others might think of me because my health and wellbeing were more important. I was grateful of the outpouring of support and love from family and friends. 
Stop worrying about what others think. Sure we all want to be accepted but remember YOU you need to work on YOU first so you can be better for others.

Are you selfish? If not, I would encourage you to become selfish. Let me explain. I am talking about becoming selfish in certain areas of your life. The important areas? Your mental health, physical health and spiritual health (if you are in to that). There is nothing wrong with wanting to better yourself. 
Does this mean you become selfish with your love ones or friends? NO! It means that if you don't take care of yourself first and learn to be selfish then you will not be your best self for others. 
So, start becoming selfish so the better version of YOU can come out =)

There were many times in the past where I would wake up, and dread the day ahead. All the BS that was facing me, and wondering whether or not I would be able to get through it. I lived like this for many years. Maybe YOU are right now. 
But something happened when I hit the bottom in my life. I realized that every trouble, challenge or defeat was making me stronger. You see, I don't believe that things JUST HAPPEN to me anymore. I believe life happens to me for a reason. To make me stronger and to provide me with the experience and education to move forward and hopefully not make the same mistakes. Life is not easy. It was never designed that way. Sure, there are highs and lows, but I believe that so much of life is the attitude we bring to it, and guess what? YOU CONTROL YOUR ATTITUDE. 
So much of life is wrapped up with YOUR mindset. If you want to be happier, then change your mindset. Yes, it takes hard work and action but YOU control that. No one else.
