James is a former US Marine who, after studying criminal justice at the University of Illinois embarked on a highly decorated fifteen-year career with the Chicago Police Department. The book is a compelling argument against the status quo of overburdened courts, overcrowded jails, and persistent socioeconomic and gender inequality under the law.
